Vehicle classes
The workhorse of the fleet
Lowered-floor vans with a manual or semi-automatic ramp at the rear. Best for manual and lighter powered chairs, and for journeys where a single wheelchair user travels with family or a carer.
For heavier powered chairs
Larger vehicles with a powered tail lift instead of a ramp, which removes gradient from the equation entirely. Necessary for heavier powered chairs, tilt-and-recline chairs and most bariatric chairs.
Group and route work
Configured on flexible floor tracking so seats can be removed and wheelchair positions added. This is what runs day centre timetables, SEND routes and group outings with a mixed passenger list.
Exact capacities are confirmed at booking. Seat counts and wheelchair positions vary between vehicles in each class and with the layout in use. Tell us the chair and the number of passengers and we will name the vehicle rather than the category.
Access and safety equipment
Maintenance
Before the vehicle leaves, the driver checks lights, tyres, fluids, bodywork and the condition of the access equipment. Defects are reported and logged, and a vehicle with a safety-critical defect does not go out.
Ramps, lifts and restraint tracking are inspected on their own interval, separate from vehicle servicing. Access equipment wears differently from an engine and cannot be left to an annual MOT.
Manufacturer service intervals, MOT compliance and records kept for each vehicle. Available for commissioner inspection or as part of a tender submission.
Vehicles cleaned between journeys, with an enhanced clean where infection control precautions have applied. Not glamorous, and immediately obvious to a passenger when it has been skipped.
For commissioners: vehicle documentation, maintenance records, insurance certificates and access equipment inspection records are available on request for tender submissions and contract audits.
